Top trending baby names of 2014

As many new parents would attest, naming your child can be a nail biting experience. The name you give your child is what makes them unique and will help them discover their place in the big new world.

So for soon- to-be-parents looking for some inspiration, or those wondering how their name choice faired among others, we've highlighted some of BabyCentre's the top baby names and trends in Australia for 2014.

For girls, the ever popular Ava has moved up to take the top spot in 2014, bumping Charlotte down to third position. Making their grand appearance into the top ten baby names are Mia and Ella, while Zoe and Sophia have dropped out of the top ten all together.

Names including V are definitely on trend with Ivy, Evie, Olivia, Evelyn and Violet all entering the top 50 with ease last year.

For boys, Oliver remains the number one favourite with Noah in second place and Jack a long time favourite in third. Mason and Henry are new comers to the top ten list of popular boys names and are rumoured to have jumped up the list thanks to baby Kardashian born in 2009 and Khloe Kardashian's toy giraffe collection - every giraffe is named Henry!  

Thomas and Liam made an appearance in the top ten list of most popular boys names in 2014, with Lachlan, Charlie, Cooper and Ethan falling back to positions 13, 14,15 and 16 respectively.

So what are some of the name trends for 2014?

Games of Thrones addicts and admirers of the independent and headstrong, Ayra Stark, will be pleased to know that Aria (spelt in a number of different ways) has hit the top 50 list for the first time in 20th position.

Matilda and Charlie are also new entrants into the top 50. After taking a year off in 2013, these names are making their way back into popularity.

Girls names with an N or ER at the end are increasingly making an appearance, moving away from the traditional girls' names that end with a an A or E sound.

Family names as first names remain a popular trend for boys, while boy names starting with H are also on trend.

Hudson, Henry, Hunter and Harrison all moved up the list in 2014, while Mason, Luca, Sebastian and Archer were among the biggest movers and shakers in 2014 and climbing the ladder.

If you're a celebrity tracker and want to know what the glitterati are naming their babes, then check out some of these celebrity baby names that made an impact in 2014.

Some of the more unique names in 2014 from star-powered parents were River (Megan Gale's son), Apollo (Gwen Stefani's son), Bodhi (Mark Webber's son) and Summer (Christina Aguilera's daughter).

Australian parents Melissa Gorge, Hamish Blake and Kate Ritchie named their children Raphael, Sony and Mae respectively and with the Australian tennis season in full swing, we can't forget a mention of Roger Federer's little twins, Leo and Lenny.

Just Back from an amazing trip to the USA. I love this care free swing shot of my youngest in Central park. Looking forward to swinging back into work mode, full of new ideas and inspiration. Harmony Day

It's been a long time between blogs I know however I must admit I am finding that the use of Facebook has taken over! Yesterday was Harmony Day and to celebrate the kids all spoke about what harmony means to them at school...one of the responses was by a 5 year old prep Student.

Its like...friendship and everyone gets along!

I thought how appropriate!

Wouldn't it be nice if just everyone could get along how perfect could life be???

Well we are in full christmas mode already here at IdTee central! It looks like people are getting in early! The shops already have all the decorations out ....is it just me or are they creeping out earlier and earlier every year?

It's Birthday time for my girls and we have come up with this cute Mermaid invitation which you are free to use if you wish, inspration has been taken from our Idtee Mermaid design ID251. My Girls are so looking forward to their party, we have made our thank you lolly bags this year using sand buckets. Inside includes our homemade bath bombs with glitter as well as under the sea temporary tattos and fish bubble bath for the girls whilst the boys have shark squirters. Lets hope the kids enjoy these, as much as we had fun making them.

Tips to make Christmas shopping easy

It’s really easy to become overwhelmed at this time of year. Christmas parties, presents for teachers, cards, planning for feasts and shopping for presents...it’s almost enough to sap every last ounce of Christmas spirit out of you! Luckily, small things serve to remind you of the joy of this time of year and how something that seems so complicated is really very simple. For me, it was the excitement and pleasure that my daughter displayed as she spotted the decorations in shop windows a trip to the local shops. Christmas really IS an exciting time of year, especially when seen through the eyes of a child, so it’s time to tap into that excitement and approach the festivities with enthusiasm.

In order to do this, you need to have a plan, especially when it comes to shopping. The key is to be prepared. To assist you (and ourselves!), we’ve put together a few helpful suggestions to make this potentially overwhelming task simpler:



1. Get in early, beat the crowds - as the day progresses, the crowds swell...and so do your feet!

2. Set a budget and stick to it.

3. Write a list - write down what you think they would like, know what it is you are shopping for.

4. If all else fails, turn to the power of the internet. After all, on-line shopping is easy, fun and crowd-free!

D.I.Y Christmas Owl decorations

In our family, the first of December signals the time for the decorating of the tree. This is cause for much excitement as we delve into our boxes of decorations, lovingly collected over many years, each with its own special significance. Some of our most special decorations are the ones made by the kids – the endearingly lopsided paper angel, the painted pinecones, the...well, you get the picture! While beautifully coordinated designer trees look fabulous, the kids get so much more enjoyment and pride out of displaying their treasured decorations on the tree. Spring has sprung, and cooking we is!

Spring is here...finally!
After weeks and weeks of dreary weather, the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming.
In celebration of Spring, we decided to bake some biscuits for an afternoon tea picnic in the garden. Having taken possession of a fabulous cupcake-shaped cookie cutter from Bisk-Art, which just happens to match our fantastic IdTee cupcake apron, the opportunity seemed too good to miss!

Vanilla sugar biscuits


200g unsalted butter at room temperature
200g sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
450g plain flour


Beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy.
Add the vanilla and the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
Add the flour and beat until the mixture forms a dough (it may look a little crumbly at this point, but you can use your hands to bring it together).
Knead the dough lightly into a ball. Divide the ball into four portions, wrap each in cling film and refrigerate for an hour.
Bring out a portion of dough at a time and roll out on a lightly floured board to the desired thickness*.
Cut out your shapes and bake in a preheated 170°C oven for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Cool before decorating.
Decorate to your heart’s content.

For these little cupcakes I used Pettinice fondant icing which I coloured before rolling out.
Brush each biscuit with a little light corn syrup before applying the icing.*A neat trick to get a uniform thickness is to use a sort of frame on either side of your dough.
Your rolling pin will roll the dough out until it rests on top of your guides and voila!
You have a perfect thickness each time.
In this case I used wooden chopsticks (Although I’m sure the professionals have a more custom-made solution!)

Your assistants will have a lovely time cutting out and decorating these gorgeous biscuits...and an even better time eating them!
